The Besom
The Besom helps people make a difference. It provides a bridge between those who want to give time, money, things or skills and those who are in need. It ensures what is given is used effectively. The service it provides is free.
We all see the sharp inequalities of life around us - poverty, isolation, abuse, ill health, injustice, homelessness - and the devastating impact they have on people's lives. Many of us want to do something to get involved, but we don't always know how. The Besom in Bristol exists to help you make a difference to the lives of others around you, and to make it easy for you to do so. God has called the church to be his hands and feet, and to care for the poor and love the marinalised in our midst. The Besom helps to make this easy, by matching up what/how poeple want to give with those who are most in need, and organising the projects. The aim behind The Besom is that everyone - whether you are three years old or over 80, whether working in full-time or part-time, a student, a mum with toddlers, in between jobs or retired - everyone can get involved. By giving your time, money, things or skills you can help those who are in real need and make a long term positive difference to their lives.
People are giving their time and things through the Besom in a whole range of different ways. Some examples of how you can get involved are:
- Spending one Saturday painting and decorating someone's home with a group from church - perhaps for a single parent or a refugee family
- Gardening with your homegroup for someone who is unable to tend thier garden themselves
- Giving good quality practical items through the Besom - perhaps kitchen equipment or good quality bedding
- Offering your DIY skills to help improve the homes of people who are living in inadiquate housing
- Helping collect and deliver goods which are given through the Besom and delivering them to the people who need them
